I wimped out, however: instead of going the yum route, I used Preupgrade, which is a simplified version of the upgrade process. Preupgrade downloads all the necessary packages for an Anaconda-assisted upgrade. So, after about four hours of downloading the packages, I was finally upgraded to Fedora 11.

Some significant changes from the previous releases are as follows:

• The Presto yum plugin, which uses deltarpms that significantly reduces the amount of data to be downloaded in updating packages.
• F11 boots faster — about 30 seconds less than F10 in my not-so-scientific tests — because the Fedora project managed to identify boot bottlenecks (they removed setroubleshootd, for one).
• Firefox 3.5 now comes bundled with F11, which brings private browsing mode and a faster Javascript engine among other improvements.

I hit some snags, though: Gwibber (0.9.1-2.288bzr.fc11) does not seem to work, so I’m back to using TweetDeck.

I also had an issue with the Citrix ICAClient. Published apps could not be opened using Citrix ICAClient 10. What’s frustrating was that no error messages were being logged. I had to download the .ica file and run through the command line:

Warning: Unable to load any usable fontset
Error: Aborting: no fontset found

My immediate suspicion was Xorg fonts, but when I checked, I had the necessary packages. I was on version 10, so I thought I might as well upgrade to version 11 of the ICA client. I downloaded the RPM from Citrix, but could not install it because it required OpenMotif 2.3.1.

Now, OpenMotif was removed from Fedora in FC6 due to licensing issues — lesstif was the recommended alternative. However, lesstif did not have the libraries required by ICAClient, so I had to get and install openmotif-2.3.1-1.i386. I also had to install another package dependency.

I thought my woes were over, but I still got the above errors when lauching the new wfica. Finally, I found the following solution (hooray for collective knowledge!):

• Set SELinux to permissive.
• Change the location of some font directories.

I’m wondering, though, whether the SELinux dependency was valid since I did not see any related logs in /var/log/messages. But, heck, it worked.

I was finally able to use ICAClient…but not quite finished yet. ICAClient complained that I chose not to trust the UTN-USERFirst-Hardware certificate. It was an issue I encountered with the previous version, for which the solution was to export the Mozilla certificate to the ICAClient keystore.

It was smooth-sailing after that.

Since kuya Gab and Julian couldn’t go out and play, we had to have some indoor activities. I recently bought a pack of Origami papers from Saizen Daiso store in Galleria. It was a good buy: 330 75mm x 75mm papers in assorted colors, for only Php85. (Disclosure: My sister-in-law is a brand manager for Saizen.)

I folded a few animals for them: the classic crane, a frog, a snake, a raven, and a manta ray. Kuya Gab researched the rest off the web. Google was his friend all the way.

I’m also folding some modular Origami starting with simple polyhedrons, and later on (patience permits) Sonobe balls and Mio Tsugawa’s Arabesque.

(As an aside, I thought Wolfram Alpha would have some interesting results on [origami]. Sadly, I was disappointed.)

I’ve recently made one for the new kid on the block, Wolfram|Alpha. While not technically a “search engine”, Wolfram|Alpha does offer some interesting possibilties (its goals are rather ambitious — much like Google’s plan to “organize all the world’s information” — but I would love to see it succeed).

But I digress. Firefox search plugins are created using an XML file in the OpenSearch format, as below:

After hosting the XML file somewhere, you can either have the plugin autodiscovered by placing the following in the HEAD of your HTML:

or through the window.external.AddSearchProvider() DOM method:

window.external.AddSearchProvider([XML URI]);

While Wolfram|Alpha does offer its own search add-on, here’s mine for you to try.

I did not get to watch the match, but ESPN’s live coverage was wonderful. They also provided nifty visualizations.

Tweenbots are human-dependent robots that navigate the city with the help of pedestrians they encounter. Rolling at a constant speed, in a straight line, Tweenbots have a destination displayed on a flag, and rely on people they meet to read this flag and to aim them in the right direction to reach their goal.

The results were insightful: the tiny robots successfully reached their destination through the help of complete strangers. No robot was lost nor damaged.

I wonder how the Tweenbots would fare in, say, Quiapo or Cubao, or Rizal Park even.

The kids are at it: running all over the house, thrashing toys everywhere, consuming carbon like crazy running the air conditioner on high almost all day (and throughout the night).

So they won’t get (too) bored this summer (kuya Gab, specially), Peng and I lined up a few activities for them.

Gab is having swimming lessons — he has great form, by the way (just like Tatay ). He just went through the McDonald’s Kiddie Crew program, the top Kiddie Crew FTW! He will also be continuing his Taekwondo classes, and hopefully get blue belt before summer ends.

Julian, on the other hand, is having a grand time as always. He sometimes accompanies kuya in his swimming lessons. We’ve set up the pool in the backyard so they can chill on weekends.
